Sankofa Live Museum is an engaging platform for participants to be introduced to and learn historical facts about Black Indigenous Persons of Color (BIPOC), and elements of theatrical presentation and monologue writing. They create dramatizations for museum exhibits and enact live on Zoom for an audience. Participants learn history, dramatize legacy, research, write, and speak. This program is for adolescents and adults. Everyone will be learning history and creating dramatic vignettes..

SANKOFA’S BUILD A CITY

(Grades 6 – 9)
17 Weeks

Through interaction and engagement, students learn about the features of cities, what makes some unique, and why citizens maintain residency in them. They explore historical cities, and elements of architecture, mathematics, planning, design, history, and culture to create their own Sankofa city that reflects major elements of towns and African culture.

SANKOFA’S WRITING THE ARGUMENT ESSAY

(Grades 6 – 9)
17 Weeks

Formulating ideas into logical arguments to support a position or view may be challenging for some students. In this program, students will utilize the writing process to learn and apply all of the aspects of crafting an argumentative essay in support of a position they have assumed or a claim they want to prove. Students will select a topic and arrive at a position that is culturally relative and responsive to Black and Brown people in the diaspora. They will apply every aspect of the process to hone a solid inarguable essay—backed by research. The skills they learn will be transferrable to particular assignments they receive in school or on a college entrance exam.

SANKOFA’S PERSUASIVE WRITING INTENSIVE

(Grades 6 – 9)
10 Weeks

Some students may find it challenging to prepare a convincing statement regarding any aspect of their thoughts or lessons. This intensive aims to provide an interactive remote setting where students are guided through the writing process for creating a persuasive essay that incorporates a relevant historical or cultural focus, event, preference, idea, institution, or crusade.

SANKOFA’S RESPONDING TO LITERATURE INTENSIVE

(Grades 6 – 9)
10 Weeks

Reading for understanding involves juggling several tasks at once. Readers must decipher and decode sounds, recognize words, store information into memory, and monitor their own understanding or lack, thereof. In this intensive, students will learn to apply strategies that support monitoring their own understanding or confusion and comprehension of nonfictional and fictional text. Selected short passages will be read during these sessions.

SANKOFA’S FRACTION FUN IN MATH INTENSIVE

(Grades 5 – 9)
10 Weeks

Math is a literacy—a field of study involving language, codes, comprehension, and articulation. In this intensive, students explore the concept of parts of a whole—fractions—through various forms of representation and learn to apply effective strategies for computing solutions involving the four mathematical operations and solving word problems involving factions. This intensive is  designed to support students who either falter in their understanding of the topic, or who would benefit from a refresher.

In this intensive, students will explore the concept of quantities less than a whole—decimals—through representation, symbols, vocabulary, and computing, using appropriate strategies for solving real life problems. This intensive is designed to support students who either falter in their understanding of the topic, or who would benefit from a refresher.
